When I’m putting together the collected editions of the ISOLA chapters, usually it’s just a matter of compiling the five or six issues that were published individually and adding some additional material, covers, etc. This time, when Brenden and I read through the chapters that would form the second chapter (issues 6-10) we felt that the ending had been rushed and didn’t satisfactorily conclude the arcs we’d introduced. Even though this chapter was always intended to be more of a free-form series of moments of Rook and Olwyn wandering toward their ultimate destination, there were moments that we felt were incomplete.
The Miluse (witch) character, especially, was one aspect that we felt got short shrift in the tenth issue, mostly due to time constraints, travel, etc, but also because we didn’t think it through properly and things tend to change as you craft a story. For example, we didn’t really realize we were telling a story about mothers and daughters until the issues were done and we re-read the whole thing.
So we decided that since the trade paperback will exist forever on shelves and ultimately be the ‘official’ version of the story, we’d alter some scenes and add a bunch of additional pages to make it feel more like a self-contained chapter, more in line with the casual pacing of the first chapter. Less rushed. Better.
I’m drawing around a dozen new pages for this volume. The finished (inked) ones are here for you to check out and I’ll add more to the gallery as I get through them. Files are due in late March and the book should be out a few weeks after that. Enjoy!
