In 2016, one of my editors at DC Comics (I can’t remember who it was–sorry!) asked me to take a stab at a redesign of Wally West’s Kid Flash costume for their upcoming Rebirth event. This kind of thing is pretty common; the publisher casts a net out to freelancers to see what they come up with and then choose the direction they like best and go with it. The design work is a paying gig and lots of fun.

My history with the Teen Titans made me a candidate, I guess. I didn’t know who the new Wally West was (and still don’t) but I was given a couple of drawings to go by and I just ran with it (pun). I was told that they wanted to try something different with the suit to distinguish it from the old one. Here are the drawings I did:

At the end of this process I was thanked for my efforts and they went with another design (which was totally fine with me–that’s the nature of concept work). I think whatever they ended up with was very close to the old suit, so I guess they wanted some continuity there from the past.
